Diski title decider weekend

By Herrold Lamola

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic are out to dethrone the reigning MultiChoice Diski Challenge champions, Golden Arrows as the kings of the Diski Challenge.

With a mere two games to spare in the Multichoice Diski Challenge league, Golden Arrows are certain to lose their title this season. The title race is still open for the top four sides to grab. Bloemfontein Celtic, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs can still clinch the Diski championship as only five points separates number one and number four on the log.

A real fight is between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic though. Mamelodi Sundowns title aspirations have suffered a minor dent last week Sunday when they drop valuable two-points after playing to a 1-1 draw against Free State Stars.

Bloemfontein Celtic deposed Sundowns from the summit of the log table after collecting maximum points from their 3-2 victory against Orlando Pirates. Sundowns is now one point adrift log leaders Celtic whom are boosting a 30-points in their bag as they march to a league victory.

It will not be the first time that early pace setters Mamelodi Sundowns has let the Diski Championship slip on the eleventh hour should they lose this season's title. Bafana Ba Style has lost the inaugural league title to cross town rivals University of Pretoria in 2015 after losing their match against AmaTuks in penalty shootouts. Sundowns' woes continued the following season when they let Golden Arrows claim the league honours on the final day of the season.

Sundowns lost last season's championship despite boosting a star-studded squad made of the likes of Percy Tau, Khayelihle Shozi, Flavio Bento and Motjeka Madisha. The departure of Alex Bapela (former coach) and losing some of their key players either to the first team or loaned out might have played a huge role in their stuttering finish.

Matlala Makgalwa who is arguably one of the players of the season nominees tried to forge a lethal combination with the lanky striker, Thabang Sebanyoni, but suspensions deterred their consistency. The duo have 14-goals between them so far this season, netting 7-goals a piece.

As the old saying goes: Numbers don't lie. Celtic has better numbers compared to their title rivals. Tshego Mabaso of Bloemfontein Celtic has hit the back of the net 10-times and is leading the top scorers pack.

Celtic is sitting at the helm of the Diski log table going into the final strech of the season. This is the title deciding weekend. It is now or never for the top four teams as they go into today's fixtures. Every point counts for the title chasing pack.

Celtic has to fix their defence as they tend to concede early in the first half. The Bloemfontein based outfit has conceded in the final minutes of the first halves in their last three fixtures (against Pirates, Baroka and Chiefs). Should Siwelele win their match against Ajax Cape Town today.

This weekend's fixtures will probably separates the boys from men. Only time will tell.
