Komphela or Bobby...who is the real villian?
By Malose Wa Ga Lamola
Kaizer Chiefs supporters are baying for the club mentor, Stephen Komphela’s blood, amid a stuttering start to the season.
Steve Komphela knows very well that, this columnist- is not a fan of his impeccable English that loses translation somewhere along the line. The former Kaizer Chiefs captain himself; Komphela is familiar with the club’s culture and the pressures that come with leading a team of Chiefs’ caliber. He tried to calm the situation after a 2-1 loss to Supersport United at FNB Stadium when the fans were calling for him to step down. Chiefs supporters were chanting the infamous “Steve must go.”
The fire spitting fans would be more than happy to take home the burden of a loss- as long they were assured Steve was resigning that night. It went from bad to worse when they started to throw objects at Steve and dropping the words you wouldn’t hear in church. Hooliganism is unacceptable in the sport we love so dearly. It should be condemned at all possible manner.
The truth of the matter here is: Chiefs supporters are barking up on the wrong tree. The man behind Komphela’s troubles is club manager, Bobby Motaung. Steve has not been helped by the mediocre signings made by Motaung. For Komphela to deliver at Naturena, Chiefs must compete on the transfer market.
In these three years that Steve has been in charge of the club; approximately 30 players have been shipped out in the name of re-building. Bobby has never made any acquisitive signing in years. If you still think Steve is not good enough to sit in the dugouts for Chiefs; remember the reason behind Baxter’s resignation. Bobby was signing players Baxter never requested. The name that comes to mind as I am crashing the keys of the PC- is David Zulu; who joined Chiefs from Chippa United. Baxter made it clear that he never wanted to sign Zulu. “David Zulu was not on the list of the players I wanted.” said Baxter.
A man who does not eat at home will never give his wife money to buy and cook him a delicious soup. Two years later, Komphela also claimed the new signings were not his preference. “The new players are not my preference but they fit the Chiefs way (Chiefs style of play),” Steve is a bad coach? Let me remind you: Beware; never confuse what you wish for with reality. Bobby is clearly misusing his powers.
Chiefs is still relying on the ageing trio of Siphiwe Tshabalala, Tsepo Masilela and Benard Parker for rescue when the going gets tough. It only comes natural that the older you grow the slower you become. Pace fades away with age. The truth about loyalty is that; it blurs people’s perception about reality.
