Tau a beacon of hope
By Herrold Lamola
CONGRATULATIONS are in order to Mamelodi Sundowns MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) side for clinching yet another title. They won the MultiChoice International tournament in the Netherlands following a 1-0 victory over Ichifuna Football Club.
The Chloorkop-based outfit have mirrored the success of their senior side. The Brazilians clinched their first ever MultiChoice Diski Challenge title in three seasons - earning them a ticket to the International MultiChoice tournament.
Surely the success of their first team has rubbed off on to the junior side. Pitso Mosimane's men were in Korea to honour their FIFA Club World Cup fixtures late last year and the juniors are in celebratory mood in the Netherlands following their victory.
The man who was part of the Reserve Leauge side barely two seasons ago has now won the Champions League and scored a wonder goal at the Club World Cup. Percy Tau is truly serving as an inspiration to those lads he used to share a dressing room with.
As an avid supporter of development football, I am always glued to my screen when Asidlali League is televised. I have watched Percy Tau grow from a boy to the man he is today. Percy has displayed signs of maturity lately and that is crystal clear in his performances.
Pitso Mosimane has changed Sundowns’ culture of bringing unwanted big name players to Chloorkop only to earn fat salaries for warming the bench. Mosimane is now promoting youngsters from the junior structures of the club. 'Jingles' granted not only Percy Tau but also the likes of Motjeka Madisha and Mpho Mathekga have had a glimpse of being in the first team.
It is now up to the laities to pull up their socks and raise their hands as they signal to Pitso that they are ready for a first team opportunity.
I have come to realize that Percy Tau is the youngest in the Mamelodi Sundowns starting line-up. For that reason I call him Percy 'Last Born' Tau. Those old toppies who have watched South African football of yesteryear will remember the main man 'Last Born’.
It is because of his exploits that he has been called up to the national team for the up coming two Bafana Bafana friendlies against Angola and Guinea Bissau respectively. 'Last Born' has been the talk of the town for quite sometime now and it is no fluke that he is in the Bafana Bafana camp.
From MDC star to the senior national team. Tau has to crack into the Bafana set up and cement his place there. We don't want one-hit wonders at Bafana Bafana - only consistency will yield us results.
Percy Tau is a beacon of hope to South African youngsters.
