Benni knows the Cape culture
By Malose Wa Ga Lamola
Commitis appointed Eric Tinkler to lead his team. Tinkler's two seasons stay at City exceeded expectations. Surely Commitis must have had a headache of finding Tinkler's successor. But he couldn't have appointed any other better man to take charge of his club than Benni Mccarthy.
McCarthy has taken City to new heights. The future looks bright for a team that has a Capetonian coach and a drive to play a total brand of footbal. City is set to lock horns with Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium- in a fierce Nedbank Cup quarter-finals clash. With the two sides having already met twice this season- each team claiming victory at their own backyard- this match will be more than a grudge encounter.
Benni has outdone himself since taking the reins at City. To reach the MTN8 final in his first season- with the modest squad at his disposal and went all the way to win the same tournament -the following season. Perhaps more essential to secure an all important eight million, speaks volumes of his ability to turn ordinary squad into world beaters. Distant are the memories of the Capetonian complaint of the referee being the outstanding performer against the same opposition. Benni has since developed a bond with City fans in a way that is uniquely vital to Cape Town City. McCarthy is perfect for City- he knows what the fans are about; what the city is about and what the club stands for. The MTN8 victory should fill club supporters with a sense of anticipation that there is still a room for improvement.
Reaching the Nedbank Cup semi-finals ahead of some big clubs is no mean feat- and winning it- will make Benni a threat to many.

When John Commitis bought Mpumalanga Black Aces back in 2015- a little was expected- from the relocated and renamed club. Not a big fan of club sales myself- but Cape Town City- gave the people of Cape Town a sense of belonging.
