Behind 'Dance' Philosophy: Dan 'Dance' gave Chippa inner peace
By Herrold Lamola (@Lamola_eitcHDee)
Dan 'Dance' Malesela gave the people of Port Elizabeth a reason to smile. Chippa United is playing a good brand of football with a South African flair. Malesela believes there is something special about the South, be it Southern Africa or South America.
'Dance' says the Southerns are 'entertainers'. "I believe football should be played according to a team's strength, which is why I always believed that there is something particular about the South, be it Southern Africa or South America. The foundation of my philosophy is my belief that we should be entertainers, because that is what brings fans to the stadium," Malesela told Kick-Off magazine.
Chippa United gave Mamelodi Sundowns a run for their money in the first leg of the two legged MTN8 Semi-final encounter. The game ended in a dull draw but that was one of the best games so far this season. Sundowns usually have upper hand over their opponents but this time around they were chasing after Chippa United shadows. The Chilli Boyz were knocking the ball around with great movements off the ball and pass interceptions.
The celebrations brought back memories of townships during the era of Football Wednesdays, with most of the talk centered on a brilliant spell of passing reminiscent of the "shoe-shine and piano days".
I don't see most of the teams coming back from the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium should Chippa United play the way they did against Sundowns. The stadium attendance has declined at a rapid rate in post 2010 World Cup but Chippa has brought back the hopes of South African football fans that want to attend games and watch South African type of football.
Malesela has earned his stay at Chippa United. Malesela did what his predecessors failed to do. He paid the Chairman's faith with some valuable victories that includes Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates late last season.
With the Chairman of the Chilli Boyz, Chippa Mpengesi, known of his impartiality when it comes to coaches it came as a shock to many to see Malesela staying so long at the club. If there is something Dance and Mpengesi have in common is the winning mentality. 'Dance' always wants to win. He has once threatened to leave Chippa United following a disastrous exit from the Nedbank Cup. The Chilli Boyz suffered a 3-2 defeat to the then National First Division side Baroka. It was a wake up call to the Chilli Boyz as they went on to finish in a record 6th position on the log that season.
“Yes I think we had leaped from 14th to sixth. We had leapt that much, so another good leap will be into the top three I think. If we can do that, and I know that it’s possible, will be big for us. It will be useless of us to go back to number six or get out of the top eight. Now that will be bad. That will show that we not growing. We need to show some growth in our team. I think from three up will be fine.”
Chippa Mpengesi is reaping the results of keeping 'Dance' at the Chilli Boyz. Mpengesi's tendency of chopping and changing his coaches like a chameleon changing colours have not breed any results. Now he is speaking some sense. Development!
Should Chippa United sink the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the much anticipated MTN8 semi-final, Malesela will be the first coach to take Chippa United to a cup final.
