Wits title defense in jeopardy

By Herrold Lamola

The four time Premier Soccer League winning mentor- Gavin Hunt- is not oblivious of the fact that; winning a title is more easier than defending it.

It has been twenty-one odd years, since the inception of the Premier Soccer League, and seven teams have won the 'Big Handles' title. Manning Rangers was the first team to lay their hands on the most prestigious title in South African football in 1996\97 season. Santos, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Supersport United and the defending champions went on to become victors. Only four of the aforementioned winners have managed to defend the trophy.

Tshwane is the most successful city in the PSL era- with the two Tshwane giants in Sundowns and Supersport boasting ten league titles between themselves. The successful club in this era- Sundowns- has won the title back to back twice along with their rivals Pirates. Hunt knows how to defend the title as he did in his hatrick with Supersport United (2007 season to 2010 season). The job he did with ease in Tshwane seem to be more difficult at Braamfontein.

Bidvest Wits quest to defend their first ever league trophy is ominous.  With six loses in their first ten league matches- the Braamfontein outfit- will be more concerned about avoiding relegation than defending the league. This is the worst start by the defending champions in the double decade of the PSL era. There are plenty of reasons to Wits looming disastrous season. The injury prone Wits has had more players in their physio ward.

I have been hammered by many in the football fraternity for criticizing some of Wits signings at the begging of the current campaign. I still maintain my views here. The Clever Boys made some of not so clever signings. In my argument- I said Wits was turning into a pre-Pitso Sundowns. Sundowns was signing anything that moves before Pitso Mosimane turned them into a more consistent team they are. Wits lured players that they didn't need. You need a manageable squad with quality to defend the league. You cant afford to claim that you are willing to defend your title- with a makeshift team.

Wits is lagging at the bottom of the log ahead of tomorrow's league fixtures. It is not how you start but how you finish as they usually say but football is a totally different ball game. The way you start determines how you finish. Wits should be wary of how things are penning out at Braamfontein.
