Sundowns Can't Afford To Be Homeless

By Malose Wa Ga Lamola

Mining magnate and Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe, has turned his side into one of the power houses of African club football and should be credited for his great efforts.

Sundowns is still ‘homeless’ though. The Brazilians are arguably an international brand now but everyone has a home. A team of Sundowns’ calibre can't afford to share a stadium with a rugby side such as the Blue Bulls. The two teams have been using Loftus Versveld stadium as their home base for both football and rugby matches respectively. If not in Hatfield using Bulls dressing room, then they are in Atteredgeville swapping change rooms with cross town PSL rivals Supersport United. A team that worth €15.20 million (over R293.2 million) in today's exchange rate can't afford to be gallivanting around Tshwane, because it is too expensive to do.

Sundowns is a Mamelodi brand and should play their home matches at home. The HM Pitje Stadium needs to be renovated and become a slaughterhouse for the reigning Premier Soccer League champions. Whoever said money can't buy you success never had enough.

Motsepe is willing to break the bank to get architects gmm HM Pitje structure. City of Tshwane attempted to renovate a 25 000 sitter structure at a value estimated to be around R74 million. The capital city municipality has been warned to take a back seat as Motsepe is going solo this time around. The Brazilians president wants to resurrect HM Pitje from the dead on
his own.

"We will always go back to HP Pitjie. We will use our own money (for renovations) if we have to. But first, we will wait to see what the government is planning and take it from there" Said Motsepe.

Bafana Ba Style has been attracting supporters to their home games especially in continental club competitions. The club can play before a full house if they take their home games to HM Pitje. Mamelodians need a team that belongs to them. A team that they belong to. It will grant them a sense of belonging.

Taking Sundowns matches to HM Pitje will be a cherry on top for Masandawana after the club has tied Mosimane for four more years on a lucrative deal. Motsepe says he can't afford to pay Mosimane peanuts, it is expensive to have him cheaper.
