By Malose Wa Ga Lamola

Suspension of the Absa Premiership has come at a huge cost with sponsors freezing finances during national lockdown, but Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits can breath a sigh of relief, as Caf prepares to release funds earlier than anticipated.

Caf usually pays off  intercontinental club competitions at the end of the season but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the football governing body decided to pay out a little earlier this time. Wits qualified to play in the Caf second tier competition by virtue of finishing third on the domestic log standings.

Though, the then Bidvest Wits CEO Jose Ferreira is on record saying the confederations cup is not a 'priority' for The Clever Boys because of its financial straining, now the club will be smiling all the way to the Bidvest bank. "The costs of the Confederation Cup are a lot bigger than the costs of participating in the CAF Champions League." Ferreira said at the time.

"Yet, the prize money as you progress in the competition is like a fifth of what you get playing in the Champions League." Ferreira insisted.

A cash strapped Wits need every cent now and $275 000 (R5.1 million) from Caf will aid the team patch up during this trying times. Sundowns will get a bigger piece of the pie after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League and losing out to Egyptian giants Al Ahly. For finishing in the top eight of the elite competition The Brazilians will get $550 000 (around R10.2 million) in today' exchange rate.

Caf President Ahmad Ahmad confirmed the news through the Federation' website. "The world football and for that matter African football is going through unprecedented difficulties." Said Ahmad.

"The situation has had a telling effect on African football stakeholders and Caf is being responsive to the needs of our clubs, one of our key stakeholders, by facilitating the payment of their prize monies well ahead of time." Ahmad confirmed.

Sundowns has been consistently playing Caf Champions league football for the past five years. On the other hand Wits toying with continental football, only fielding a second stream side, to ensure the team doesn't proceeds past the preliminary stage.

The two South African sides have had contrary fortunes in Caf competitions. With the The Brazilians enjoying more successful spells compared to that of The Students. A team with deep pockets like Sundowns will always prioritize dominance over financial remuneration.
